November in Japan

Digital Installation – Sound and Visual Series

On September 28, 2025, we left for a two-month period in Japan, driven by the desire to immerse ourselves in a culture so different from our own. October proved to be a period marked by discovery and continuous inspiration, giving rise to the idea of creating, for the second month of our stay, a journal that was both sonic and visual. The installation November in Japan seeks to record fragments of reality over time, captured without filters or edits. It questions the perception of everyday life and the composer’s instinct within a contemporary context marked by the erosion of spontaneity and the dominance of codes, immediacy, and the pursuit of perfection.

The exhibition brings together several series, created over the 30 days of November. These unfold across four levels of this virtual museum, offering both spatial and temporal navigation.
The first room, the Space Room, invites a journey through space and time based on the geographical coordinates of our places of residence.
The second room, the Sound Room, presents the sound sketches created independently each day, forming an acoustic archive of the moment and revealing both the diversity and similarity of our compositional approaches.
The third room, the Time Room, features three photographic series captured at specific times of day: 7 AM, 12 PM, and 7 PM. In this space, time becomes the master and unveils each image at its designated moment.
The fourth, the Mirror Room, named in reference to Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Rooms, focuses on the practice of self-portraiture and will be unveiled in early March, once all the days of November are accessible.

The installation is built progressively throughout February, revealing a new day of November each day. It will be fully accessible starting March 2. Navigation between days is done using the button at the bottom of the screen. For a better experience, using a wide screen is recommended.

Geographical Coordinates

This room presents a wall composed of 30 GPS coordinates. Each coordinate randomly reveals the name of a location. These locations correspond to the route we followed during November and provide context for the entire installation. By clicking on a coordinate, the exhibition shifts in space and time, changing the day shown in both the Sound Room and the Time Room.

Sound Room

Composition, Field Recording

Like artists carrying sketchbooks, we traveled across Japan with microphones, computers, a tiny keyboard, and a guitar. Each of us created 30 musical sketches, one for each day of November. Every day, one hour was dedicated to translating emotions into music, spontaneously and without preparation. We chose not to listen to these pieces before returning to Europe, so that the experience would remain personal and instinctive. As a composing duo, this process reveals how perceptions and emotions can come together or differ, even when the same day is shared. Inside the room, the sound sketches can be explored using the on-screen cursor. Arielle's pieces are on the left, Francesco's on the right. Time Room

Photography

This room presents three photographic series: images taken each day at 7 AM, 12 PM, and 7 PM. The photographs are not retouched and are taken without seeking remarkable or popular places. They show the present moment as it was, at that exact time and location. In the Time Room, time is the guiding principle. Visitors can move through days, but not through hours. The day is divided into three periods: 7 AM–12 PM, 12 PM–7 PM, and 7 PM–7 AM. At any moment, only the photograph corresponding to the current period is visible. In a society driven by speed and perfection, the work invites patience and attention to the simplicity of everyday life.

Self-Portraiture

This room focuses on the practice of self-portraiture. Each day, we challenged ourselves to come up with a different way to capture our reflection. When you enter, you will see them displayed on every wall, as if they were looking at each other from different places and spaces.

Instructions: This room uses your webcam for the full experience. Your data is not stored on any server. If you prefer not to activate it, the space is still open to explore. Move around, look for us, and look for yourself.
